The State of Mississippi initiatedits Education Reform Act
in 1982. Since that time, great strides have been made in up-grading
primary and secondary education. Since 1992 and the advent of casino
gaming, both the state and local governments have reinvested gaming
revenues to further improve the quality of instruction. In 1998, the
Biloxi Public School System was recognized nationally by Expansion
Management magazine, as Mississippi's only blue ribbon school district for
its investment in education and graduate outcome. The Gulfport and
Pascagoula School Systems were also listed in this prestigious ranking.
With these added revenues, the eleven Coast school districts now invest an
average of $4,604 per student, with some districts spending as high as
$5,500 annually per student.. Student/teacher rations have decreased to
1:16 and average ACT scores have increased to 20.75. Five school
districts' scores exceed the national average.
Higher Education
The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers a variety of post high
school choices from an extensive community college system and various
occupational training facilities to two universities, University of
Southern Mississippi – Gulf Park Campus and William Carey College.
Residents also have access to eight other universities in close proximity,
from New Orleans to South Alabama.
Technology
Keesler Air Force Base is the world's largest electronics
training facility, now serving all branches of the military. Founded in
1941 on over 1,500 acres of land in Biloxi, the facility is home to the
world-famous Hurricane Hunters, whose missions provide data used by the
National Weather Service in forecasting hurricane development and
landfall. In addition, Keesler is home to the Air Force's second largest
medical center featuring a staff of 2,000 who provide comprehensive health
and dental care in more than 62 specialties.
Finally, the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, administered by
the University of Southern Mississippi, offers educational, research, and
service opportunities to local, state, and federal agencies, private
businesses, commercial fishermen, seafood processors, environmental
organizations, advisory panels, and educators.
